Plant Milk

19 August 2021 / Posted in Be FoodWise

Choosing to avoid dairy, whether for ethical or health reasons, does not mean that there can be no milk in your diet or daily coffee. The popularity of various plant milks has skyrocketed over the last few years, and there are many options easily available for consumers to choose from. To celebrate World Plant Milk Day on 22 August, we’re highlighting popular plant milks that you can easily purchase in South Africa.

Almond Milk: is nutritionally low in protein but it contains 50% more calcium than a cup of cow’s milk. It has a mild and slightly nutty flavour - ideal for eating with cereals.

Soy Milk
: is the only milk alternative that contains the same amount of protein as cow's milk. It also has similar characteristics, so you can use it as a replacement ingredient when cooking, baking or to froth milk for your coffee.

Rice Milk: is the most hypoallergenic milk available, so it is particularly suitable for people suffering with allergies and intolerances. It has a sweet flavour and can be used to substitute cow's milk.

Oat Milk: is slightly sweet with a thin consistency that is similar to low fat milk. It’s suitable for cooking and baking, to serve with cereals or to froth for a dairy free cappuccino.

Macadamia Nut Milk: is low in calories. It tastes great as is, and is suitable for desserts and coffee, to be poured over a bowl of cereal or drink it straight up.

Hemp milk: is made from hemp seeds. It has a very nutty flavour and can come across as bitter to some consumers, especially if you are used to the sweeter flavour of most plant based milk alternatives.
